Qld: Hurley denies assaulting Mulrunji

In Queensland, Palm Island's former top policeman has denied assaulting a local Aboriginal
man who later died in police custody.

Senior Sergeant CHRIS HURLEY has given evidence at the inquest into the death of 36-year-old
MULRUNJI DOOMADGEE in the Palm Island police watchhouse last November.

He has denied driving his knee into MULRUNJI, or striking him in the eye.

Paramedic MATTHEW BOLTON, who attended to MULRUNJI at the watchhouse, has told the
inquest the man had an abrasion and slight swelling above the right eye.

There were riots in the community after autopsy results released a week after MULRUNJI's
death showed he had broken ribs and a ruptured spleen.



The inquest is contuiung before deputy state coroner CHRISTINE CLEMENTS.
